Childsside is starting an exciting two-year project, training professionals to deliver our New Home, New Country workshop series to parents.

New partnered work

‘ChildsSide’s New Home New Country Workshops’

with The Salvation Army

ChildsSide is happy to share that we have completed partnership work with The Salvation Army and Ashiana (Sheffield) 2021

  •  A tailored parenting workshop series for trafficked families, to asses needs, support, and provide knowledge for new parents in U.K.
  • Providing families with tips, tools and up-to-date information to help them adjust, settle and cope with their new role in a safe, supportive and sensitive environment.

Further  workshops are being  discussed as some long-term outcomes from the participants show how useful the workshops have been.

When The Salvation Army first met with Judith and Liz from ChildsSide, it was immediately obvious we shared the same passion! That of supporting parents, who have had difficult experiences and are relatively new to the UK, to achieve the best outcomes for them and, in particular, their children.

Delivering the Modern Slavery Victim Care Contract is a significant task. The scope of our work is vast and often complex but can be extremely rewarding when one witnesses the impact it can have on the lives of those we serve. Finding a partner like ChildsSide who understood, and patiently worked around, our contractual priorities to achieve our goals, meant a great deal.

And although COVID-19 threatened to jeopardise our plans, I’m very pleased that we were able to work through the challenges it presented to eventually pilot with a group of service users.

English is often not the first language of those trafficked into the UK however, and although interpreters supported each session, Judith and Liz were able to transcend any language barrier with their warmth, compassion, subject knowledge and smiles!

From the parents...

“I feel I have become better at listening and responding to my child. For example, for a long time my son used the same bowl for his breakfast. One day I used a different bowl and he didn’t eat; he was puzzled. I might have said ‘just eat your food’ before I learned to think about his responses. I decided to use his usual bowl and he ate it happily. I remembered what we learned about this and attachment, and the importance of their comfort and giving choices.”

From a participants...

“The workshops gave me a chance to learn new helpful things. I have shared my book with a friend who was struggling with parenting.”

The workshops made it possible for my son to have the experience of going to a nursery. It was difficult to leave him with strangers and for the first time. Each week I felt more comfortable leaving him and he adjusted. I saw other parents with their children and people who cared about us and I realised I wasn’t alone.”
