Nola Ellen Education, DJ SchoolUK   with ChildsSide makes Inter-Mix

Dan demonstrating mixing and InterMix is learning together - loving the music.

Judith represented ChildsSide with InterMix, in a new partnered project with Nola at Nola Ellen Education Training/Consultancy and Dan at DJ School UK. This funded project was delivered through Voluntary Action Leeds and during April 2017 for 17-24 year olds, bringing young people together with a DJing activity and 'Challenging conversations'

-------------------------------------------------------

Between January and June 2017, Voluntary Action Leeds (VAL) ran an innovative 6-month long project called ‘Challenging Conversations’, funded by the Home Office’s Hate Crime Community Projects programme.

The project was made up of several, separate sub-projects which ran at a neighbourhood-level across Leeds. The aim was to investigate the causes of hate crime amongst young people and then to develop some potential responses to it.

ChildsSide was delighted to have been able to participate in one of these sub-projects, in what was a collaboration between three organisations; a freelance trainer specialising in working with young people, a Community Interest Company (CIC) with a background in supporting wellbeing in families (ChildsSide) and a non-profit DJ’ing project that works with young people. Working together, we delivered a diversity awareness course for five young males from settled communities and five young males who had recently arrived in the UK. We then ran a workshop for them to mix shared DJ tracks, working closely together to produce them.  The young people found they could use music as a medium for conversation and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. They were able to develop new relationships that have continued beyond the original project.

Overall, ‘Challenging Conversations’ had a small, but valuable, impact on young people, helping them to build better relationships with each other. The initiative laid the groundwork for more in-depth conversations in the future and recommended that we all to look for ways to bring young people from different communities together.
